Fowey Class – Year 1

Mrs Geeves and Mrs Orchard with Ms Carter and Mrs Brenson

What an exciting year we have in Year One as we embark on our learning with the move from Early Years!

Linking in with our six engaging topics, we will be listening to and reading lots of stories with the help of our reading teddies and reading buddies across the school; this will then lead us on to writing our own texts.

In maths, we use lots of resources and apparatus to help us count, add and subtract, as well as learn how to use a variety of methods to solve problems.

We love to be creative and musical so plan lots of exciting music, art and DT projects to complete, as well as special enrichment or trips linked to our learning. We also have lots of opportunities to use our imagination in both our indoor and outdoor play as we include continuous provision as part of our Year One learning.

We value the importance of curiosity and outdoor learning. We explore the local environment as part of our map work 'Where do I live' unit of work, Year One love to be outdoors and investigating the outdoor space for our unit on 'Plants' in Science.

Parent Curriculum Information

Each half-term we share an overview of our curriculum with our parents/carers.  A copy of these can be found at the bottom of this page.  A paper copy is sent home each half-term.  We hope our parents/carers find this useful information to know what their child is learning and to support them in having conversations with their children.

Homework

Each half-term, we create and send home a homework menu.  This has a range of learning activities linked to our current topic and reading. We send a paper copy home to parents each half-term.

Knowledge Organisers

These provide the key knowledge we will be learning in our foundation topics this half-term.  It would be useful to look at these with you child and talk about them.  You could have mini quizzes to see what they can remember, draw parts of them, or they can create their own version.  This will help the children to ensure they remember the knowledge fully.

If you would like another copy of any of these documents, please don't hesitate to contact us.

On Friday 21st October, Fowey Class celebrated their learning in the Autumn first half-term with a fairy tale day. The children came to school dressed as their favourite characters. They used special glass paints and pens to decorate fairytale suncatchers, learned how to program the bee-bot on a fairy tale map and played some fairytale games and quizzes to support their vocabulary development.

Well done fabulous Fowey!
