Viking Visits Dobwalls!
On Monday 28th April, a real-life Viking came to visit!
Lynher class had the opportunity to meet a real-life Viking! Hearing stories of his journey to the United Kingdom, as well as his battles against the Anglo-Saxons. The children re-enacted the battle of Stamford Bridge and formed a Viking long ship using shields, helmets, mast and sail, figurehead, axes, and spears. They learnt how to play Viking board games, de-coded runes and had a Viking quiz. Outside, they marched in unison whilst holding shields, forming a shield wall and performing battle drills. A day full of lots of valuable learning about their topic and some amazing experiences.
The week before the visit, Lynher class were answering the question, who were the Vikings and what is their relationship with the Anglo-Saxons? They looked at the Viking homelands and their journey to their settlements in the UK and parts of Ireland. As part of this, they explored the structure and roles within a Viking longship. In small groups they crafted ships, discussing the different parts and what life would’ve been like for those onboard. Following this, they have written a setting description of a Viking long ships sailing on the rough ocean.
